Amazon’s Counterfeit Crimes Unit—Working with Law Enforcement and Brands to Hold Bad Actors Accountable and Protect Consumers
Rob Garrett, Senior Risk Manager, and Joe Wheatley, Senior Corporate Counsel, in Amazon’s Counterfeit Crimes Unit (CCU), will discuss the global team, made up of former federal prosecutors, experienced investigators, and data analysts, that supports the company’s substantial efforts to protect its store and customers from counterfeits. Established in 2020, CCU enables Amazon to more effectively pursue civil litigation against suspected criminals, work with brands in joint or independent investigations, and aid law enforcement officials worldwide in criminal actions against counterfeiters. Amazon welcomes the partnership of brands and law enforcement in the shared objective of stopping counterfeiters and holding them accountable.

Rob Garrett is a Senior Investigative Manager with the CCU. Prior to joining CCU, Rob served as the Director, Cybersecurity Operations, US Food & Drug Administration, and before that role, he served as the Director, Offensive Counterintelligence Operations, Defense Intelligence Agency. Throughout his career with the US government, Rob has managed global teams of case officers and analysts in the conduct of strategic and sensitive operations in support of national security requirements.
Joe Wheatley
Senior Corporate Counsel @Amazon Counterfeit Crimes Unit
Joe Wheatley is a Senior Corporate Counsel in their Counterfeit Crimes Unit in Arlington, VA. He came to Amazon from the U.S. Department of Justice, where he served as a prosecutor for almost sixteen years. His cases included Darknet marketplaces selling contraband, Russian organized crime, La Cosa Nostra, and the Vice Lords. In his last role at DOJ, he served in the Office of the Attorney General as a Deputy Director of Joint Task Force Vulcan, a whole-of-government initiative targeting the MS-13 transnational criminal organization.
